In its legal response to the Brink’s lawsuit, Air Canada has denied it was “careless” and its security lax. Canadian police had identified him as the truck driver early in the investigation but had not been able to locate him.

"I'm on a mountain bike ride right here in Boulder, [Colorado], and I'm eating an energy gel [packet]," Gold told CNBC in a recent interview. "And I was curious why you couldn't put peanut butter or almond butter in that same type of squeeze pack and have an on-the-go, plant-based protein experience like an energy bar." Gold had been selling nut butters at a popular farmer's market in Boulder for two years by that point. But at the time, consumers still gravitated toward a handful of traditional peanut butter brands. Almond butter wasn't particularly popular yet, much less the flavor combinations Justin's was selling, like maple almond or chocolate hazelnut.

CNN —Drug cartels from North America have overtaken rivals in Southeast Asia to become Australia’s top suppliers of methamphetamine, police said, warning that Mexican gangs are “increasingly targeting” the country. Meanwhile, Southeast Asian meth fell to less than 15% of seizures of the drug, a highly addictive and potent stimulant. A wastewater detection program led by the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission projected meth to be Australia’s second most used drug. In 2022, authorities stopped 1.8 tons of liquid meth masquerading as coconut water in Hong Kong before it reached Australia. They were bound for New Zealand, Australia and the surrounding Pacific region, police said.

CNN —Garbage piling up in landfills isn’t just an eyesore, it’s also a climate nightmare, belching out large amounts of planet-warming methane gas. Their results revealed average methane emissions were much higher than those officially reported, according to the study published Thursday in the journal Science. Landfills tend to be a less well-known methane source, but they also have a huge impact, estimated at around 20% of global human-caused methane emissions. Most landfills in the US are federally required to measure methane emissions four times a year through walking surveys using handheld sensors. Average methane emission rates from landfills were 1.4 times higher than those being reported to the GHGRP, the report found.

Matthew and Timothy Nichols’s story could be a case study of what it means to manifest something. The goal they realized: To amass an enviable collection of Japanese maples and establish a leading role in championing them. And they knew where they might learn at least some of it. The brothers, then 21 and 27, planned a pilgrimage to the 2009 Maple Society of North America conference in Oregon, which included a tour of Buchholz & Buchholz Nursery. They hoped to meet the nursery’s owner, Talon Buchholz, who had introduced some of the Japanese maple selections they most admired.

The multiplying drones could expand into swarms that would confuse air defense systems, experts told Business Insider. But even when separated into single units, these drones' flight efficiency remains 40% higher than most small drones. Advertisement"When drones are detected, defense systems deploy a certain amount of resources proportional to the threat. If that threat suddenly multiplies, it provides an opportunity to overwhelm the air defense resources being deployed," Shumate said. Small, affordable drones are reshaping the modern battlefield in unprecedented ways, and forcing militaries to rapidly modernize their defense systems.

A Rich Braise From a Cheap Cut
  + stars: | 2024-03-17 | by ( Sam Sifton | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
I like corned beef and cabbage myself for the holiday — Irish American food to ship up to Boston with, soda bread on the side. For you, then, this incredible bourbon-braised beef (above) that Vallery Lomas developed for us. The whiskey adds a fantastic complexity to a cheap cut of boneless beef chuck burbled with maple syrup, caramelized tomato paste, thyme, bay leaves and hints of both soy sauce and lemon juice. It’s as Irish as Carmela Soprano, but I’d serve it to your ma tonight with no misgivings. (Save the leftover braising liquid to make French onion soup.)

New York CNN —On St. Patrick’s Day, throwing back an Irish whiskey might taste different than it used to. Flavored whiskey is a $1.5 billion category and accounts for 20% of all US whiskey sales. In the past few years, flavored whiskey sales have outpaced unflavored whiskey, according to Southern Glazer’s distributors. But with younger drinkers gravitating toward punchier flavors, Irish brands “have to be much more flexible than their historical beliefs have been,” he told CNN. Flavors are “a good way to get them into the brand and into the whiskey category, and certainly into Irish whiskey,” Basford said.

Opinion | On the Wild Intoxications of Spring
  + stars: | 2024-03-11 | by ( Margaret Renkl | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
I spied the first spring beauty of the year on Feb. 20, the same week a Northern flicker started drumming on our metal chimney, the week of budburst for our red maple sapling and our young red mulberries. The bluebirds often start house-hunting much earlier than they intend to nest, but the first flicker concert at dawn and the first spring beauty opening in the afternoon sun — they’re for real. Soon the crows will be stalking through the wild parts of the yard after a rain, collecting long, damp stalks of grass to line their nests with. This year spring beauties came a little late compared to last year (Feb. 16), but still very early compared to the year before that (March 20). Spring is here!

Costco recently started selling silver coins for the first time, finance chief Richard Galanti told CNN. Costco is trying to replicate its recent success with gold bars. It began selling $2,000 gold bars online in September and sold more than $100 million worth of the bars last quarter. After all, not many people are actually stashing away gold bars in their homes. We constantly buy that stuff and intentionally run out of it from time to time.”Costco is also selling precious metals as they become more valuable.

Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly has been suspended five games for cross-checking Ottawa Senators forward Ridly Greig in the final seconds of the teams' game over the weekend. The NHL's department of player safety announced the suspension Tuesday after a virtual hearing with Rielly and team and union representatives. Rielly took exception to Greig firing a slap shot into an empty net with 5.1 seconds left Saturday night to make it 5-3 Senators. He cross-checked Greig in the head and left shoulder but did not injure the 21-year-old playing his first full professional season. “He’s been on fire, obviously an incredible season,” Leafs forward William Nylander told reporters after practice Monday.

The project, dubbed Metamorphosis, focuses on transforming what otherwise might be discarded into something of value to society: rotten wood into fine instruments, inmates into craftsmen, all under the principle of rehabilitation. Two inmates were granted leave to see the concert featuring 14 prison-made stringed instruments playing a program that included works by Bach and Vivaldi. Other inmates, like Nikolae, who joined Lamponi at La Scala, are permitted more latitude. His own rocky journey to a new country has given him an understanding of the desperation that drove migrants onto unseaworthy boats. Originally, the boats were being transformed into crucifixes and nativity scenes, but the inmates who were already trained luthiers thought: why not instruments?
